The event was held at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center. The University choose this location for it's size knowing that Noam's presence in Maine was sure to gather a standing room only crowd. There was not a space in the parking lot by the time the lecture got under way. Before the lecture Noam met with UNE president Danielle Ripich at her office in Portland for a meet and greet session before heading off to the Westbrook PAC for his lecture. The highlight of the evening for me came at the very end as Noam's dedicated followers stared in awe and waited to get their books autographed. To see the excitement in their eyes was a great moment for me.

After several weeks of waiting for a two day blue sky weather window to open, it finally did. Just days before the Thanksgiving Holiday. Pubnico Point, NS is over ten hours of driving and ferry time from my office in Portland. I had consiered flying, but due to the sketchy weather forecast for the return part of my journey I decided driving would provide me with the most flexibility. I did not want to get stuck by a grounded airplane in a snowstwom. As it turned out, there was a huge snow storm on my return travel day and I would have been stuck at the closed airport.

While on location I was treated to perfect weather for photographing the 17 turbine windfarm both from the ground and air. I shot at sunrise and sunset and during the day. The late November timing of this shoot made photographing in the middle of the day fine due to the shortened day and low angle of the sun for this northern location. With a day and a half of shooting time I had enough time on the ground to provide my client with a varied body of work that captured the windfarm from many different angles and with a wide range of lighting options provided by mother nature. The locals in Nova Scotia were very friendly and being able to use US funds in Canada made leaving for this trip last minute a breeze.

]]>Downeast Bicycle Specialistshttp://www.jeffscher.com/blog/2011/11/10/downeast-bicycle-specialists.htmlJeff2011-11-10T19:16:09ZContinuing my focus on cycling in New England, yesterday I traveled up to Fryeburg to photograph the staff at Downeast Bicycle Specialists. DE Bike supplies shops, stores and independent bicycle dealers with every imaginable piece of cycle gear you could ask for, from wheels to trainers to patch kits and soft goods, they have it all. All of the employees are also dedicated cyclists, racers and outdoor enthusiasts. Watching some of the employees skateboard thorough out the warehouse with five dogs running in every direction was a blast. The skateboards do indeed help with the efficiency of getting the product the customers are requesting. It clearly also helps with morale and adds to the positive feeling you get from the business. A great taste in music adds to the positive vibe.

I was able to attend on Saturday for the mens and womans elite races. The weather was perfect and the competition blazingly fast on the realatively dry course. I decided to drive a scenic route on rural roads I had not been on before. The roads were quiet and the land was open. A short way after I had turned onto Meadow Road heading toward Lisbon Falls I saw this scene. While a lot of New England received more then their share of snow from the October snowstorm we were spared with about 5 inches on the ground. With the storm, overnight the seasons changed from Fall to Winter. This scene and photo reminded me of an early Spring day in Maine. We are all a little confused with the early arrival of the snow but the dramatic changes in the weather provides an endless canvas to document.

]]>Running in the North East Kingdomhttp://www.jeffscher.com/blog/2011/10/20/running-in-the-north-east-kingdom.htmlJeff2011-10-20T19:03:07ZI was recently sent to the North East Kingdom in Vermont for an assignment for FairPoint Communications. I could not have asked for a better destination in New England. If you are a mountain biker like me you already know how special this corner of Vermont is. The trail system off Darling Hill Road and Burke Mountain is among the very best in all of New England and the North East. If you just love a scenic location then this part of Vermont is as idyllic as exists. My assistant Jeremy Bonnett and I drove up Sunday night to scout and get ready for the photo shoot the following day. It rained the entire drive up from Portland and then held off just as we arrived and for a few hours. Jermemy Bonnett is an ultra runner and had never been on the trail system, with the break in the weather he took advantage of the trails for a nice 10 mile run. Before he took off on the trails I had him stand and model in front of some the potential back drops we would use for the photo shoot. This shot is captured with one the barns in the background from the Inn at Mountain View Farm where we stayed. The Kingdom trails were just feet from where we were standing. Lucky for me I returned the following weekend for three days of mountain biking and camping during an amazing stretch of Indian Summer.

The other day on my way to a photo shoot, I noticed that Lincoln Park on Congress Street in Portland had been converted to a mini camp for those Mainer's who are in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York and across the globe. It was a surprising sight to see tents set up in a park in downtown Portland. This morning with some free time in my schedule I made a visit to the park to meet some of the faces of those who are standing up for what they believe in, the 99%. The weather today is pretty lousy with pouring rain and those committed to the cause are doing it rain or shine! I had a bit of chat with Shane (in the hat) and after a while he asked if I would take his photo. It is not easy advocating for any cause these days but I do appreciate those who just want to be heard.
