Thank you for visiting my new web site.  My name is Jeff Scher and I am a professional free-lance photographer based in Portland, Maine. I specialize in location photography with a passion for sports, editorial and corporate assignments.

Ever since I was in my early teens running around New York City I have been capturing images, chasing light, people and always looking for that elusive moment that defines a great image.  In 1989 I received my BFA in Photography from Purchase College in Purchase NY.  In the years following college I spent most of my time honing my skills as an outdoors person teaching myself how to survive in the elements while staying on task capturing images.

Over the years my career has always moved me north. From living in NYC to Westchester, Greenwich, CT, Boston, MA and most recently my current home and base of operations, Portland, Maine.  I could not ask for a more inspiring place to live and work.  Portland is known as the Forest City and is situated right along beautiful Casco Bay. On a daily basis I am treated to views of the ocean, beaches, rivers, rugged islands, lighthouses and landmark buildings. There is a vibrant artistic community here filled with a creative and active population.  As a backdrop for a photographer I have it all here.  

Travel has always been a part of my job and I have taken assignments in North America, Central America and Europe.  I am skilled at working in a variety of challenging conditions, both indoors and outdoors I have been chased by Killer Bees in the jungles of Belize, tossed around during a violent storm in the North Sea and have battled 75 mph winds and blowing snow on the slopes of Mount Washington.  Always under pressure, whether it is from the skies of Mother Nature or the vortex of evaporating time in a corporate boardroom, I consistently emerge from a photo shoot with vivid images that are creative, powerful, and unique.

The clients I serve range from editorial lifestyle magazines, custom home and boat builders, architects and corporate law firms.  My images have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, PC World, Healthleaders, The New York Daily News, The New York Post, The Washington Post, Bangor Daily News, Direct, Downeast, AMC Outdoors, Backpacker, Doctor Patient, Boston Common, Linqua Franca, Rock and Ice, Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors,Wooden Boat, Northeast Boating, Port City Life, The Maine Switch, Natural New England, Videography, Location Update, Vermont Sports Today and also in numerous books, corporate brochures, catalogs and on the web.

When I am not on location taking photographs I can often be found on one of my bicycles or skis depending on the season.
